What is an eBook/Access Code/Courseware?

Textbook publishers create different types of content for student consumption. Depending on the experience your instructor wants you to have, they may adopt one of the three types of digital content for your class:

  1. eBook
  2. Access Code
  3. Courseware

What is an eBook?
An eBook is a textbook that has been digitized for display on a computer screen or handheld device. Essentially, it is just the physical textbook rendered on your computer. For Anderson University, all eBooks are integrated into Canvas for quick access. 

What is an Access Code?
An access code is a series of numbers/letters you use to access course content online. The content you access depends on the course, but can include things such as practice exam questions, interactive videos to help you understand course concepts, and course assignments. If your professor requires an access code, it is because at least part of your grade will be related to and/or come from the online content. For Anderson University, access codes are provided both in Canvas and on your Student Dashboard > Digital Bookshelf. You will reveal your code and navigate to a link, either provided by eCampus.com or your instructor, to redeem the code for access.

What is Courseware?
Courseware is a term that combines the words “course” with “software.” It is software containing educational content, instruction, and instructional strategies. Some types of Courseware that you may be familiar with is MyLab Math, MasteringBiology, MindTap, Acheive, Inquizitive, etc. For Anderson University, most Courseware is delivered inside Canvas; your instructor will add links directly into the content. Some courseware may also be accessible via an Access Code (see above).

What is the difference between an eBook and Courseware?
An eBook will not require an access code or an account and gives you access only to the book content. Courseware may require you to create an account with the vendor and may require an access code; you will be given access to interactive content in addition to the book.
